Glenview SportsSwap Will Keep Used Equipment Out Of Landfill

Aug 15, 2023

GLENVIEW, IL — Need some affordable "gently used" or like new sports equipment while helping the environment? The Glenview Park District and Greener Glenview are partnering up for the inaugural Glenview SportsSwap, a community project organizers say supports sustainability by keeping used sports equipment out of the landfill.

All proceeds from the event, which is planned for noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, will benefit the Glenview Park Foundation.

"We are really excited about this fun event and so happy to collaborate with the Glenview Park District," said Ann Yoshida, Greener Glenview member and event organizer. "By participating in the SportsSwap you are saving money, helping the environment, and cleaning out your garage—all at the same time! It's a win for everyone."

Organizers are asking donations to be off "gently used" sports equipment. A list of accepted items can be found here. Greener Glenview notes it will not clean or repair any times prior to the event.

Participants donating equipment can drop them off prior to the event at the Park Center West Gym, 2400 Chestnut Ave., at the following times:

Donors will receive a voucher as "credit" for each donated item. The amount of the voucher will vary based upon the type of items dropped off rather than items’ original price. Ice hockey equipment will not be accepted, and donated items will not be accepted on the day of the SportSwap.

Vouchers are not needed to shop, and items can be purchased with cash or vouchers, according to the Glenview Park District. Credit card payment will not be available. Vouchers must be presented at checkout for use as payment. Shoppers are encouraged to bring a bag to take home purchases.

Organizers said items are generally divided into four categories: balls, priced at $1; accessories/miscellaneous items, priced at $1; shoes, priced at $5; and equipment, priced at $10. For pricing and a list of accepted items, visit GreenerGlenview.org.
